Managed Security Services Provider: NZ Guide

What a managed security provider does
A managed security services provider, or MSSP, performs agreed security activities for a business. These may include monitoring, alert investigation, security administration or incident assistance. The label alone does not establish which systems are covered, when people respond or who has authority to take action.
Managed IT usually addresses broader support and maintenance. Managed security focuses on protection, detection and response. The two can work together, but responsibility must be clear. Ask a prospective provider to describe the service in operational terms rather than relying on a product list.
Compare scope and response ownership
List the users, sites, devices, cloud services and data that need protection. Ask which are included, what telemetry is available and how coverage gaps are handled. Distinguish automated detection from human investigation, and human investigation from authorised containment or recovery.
Confirm service hours, severity definitions, escalation contacts, response targets and exclusions in writing. A 24/7 monitoring product does not automatically mean a technician will attend immediately. Agree who approves disruptive actions and who coordinates with an insurer, network provider or other specialist.
Review access, evidence and commercial terms
A provider may need privileged access to sensitive systems. Limit that access to the approved scope, document ownership and review logging, subcontractors, data handling and termination arrangements. Obtain evidence for any certifications or partnership claims that matter to your procurement decision.
Compare onboarding, licences, monitoring, investigation, incident work and recovery costs. Confirm whether incident response is included or separately chargeable. Reports should explain useful actions and open risks, not just list alerts or imply that compliance is guaranteed.
Choose a practical next step
Start with an assessment of the current environment and the most material business risks. Ask for a prioritised improvement plan with clear owners. Backup testing, access hygiene and staff reporting may be as important as adding another monitoring product.
Bestcomm can review cybersecurity requirements alongside managed IT, hosting and recovery planning. Final inclusions, service hours and response commitments depend on the agreed engagement. This guide does not represent a universal 24/7 managed-security commitment.

Common questions
Does every MSSP provide the same service?
No. Compare the covered systems, service hours, authorised actions, exclusions and response ownership.
Does a security subscription guarantee compliance?
No. Compliance depends on the business’s obligations, processes and implementation, not simply buying a service.
This is general business technology guidance, not legal advice or a guarantee of security, compliance or service availability.
